DIY headband :)

No matter the hair type, I can imagine we've all experienced a similar scenario: pondering to our morning reflections...so this third day hair is totally workable, right?! I've found that with a little something on your head, it totally is!

Headbands are a great accompaniment to a not so perfect hair day -- they let your hair and scalp breathe, while still showing off your lovely strands! This is a quick and fairly easy DIY. With a little resourcefulness, or if your craft closet overflows like mine, you may even have all supplies on hand.

SUPPLIES (Yours may differ. This is a basic, general guide.)

  • headband material (in my case I used elastic and ribbon, black to match my hair)
  • sturdy adhesive or small safety pins
  • scissors
  • cardstock
  • decorative elements (foam, faux flowers, small patches, gems, bows, etc)

Directions below are for creating a foam headband and a faux floral headband. These instructions may be used a guide for making just about any type of headband. It's a standard formula -- great for beginning DIYers :)

To begin, measure the circumference of your head. You can use measuring tape or your elastic/ribbon. Make sure to leave extra inches on the end. You want at least 1/2 an inch for an overlapping, fully closing circular headband or about 5 inches for a tying headband.

For foam headband:

Decide which shape to make and trace onto your cardstock. I wanted a 20s inspired headband so I used my travel size Lux Locks to make circles on my cardstock. Use the cardstock as a guide to trace onto your foam. Cut the shapes out and arrange on to your headband material, spacing as you see fit.

For this headband, I used elastic for the back and ribbon for the front (where the foam pieces rested). Place one end of the ribbon on the first foam piece, starting about halfway in the middle. Continue glueing pieces until you reach the end of the ribbon. Glue the last piece of foam like the first, making sure to only glue the ribbon about halfway.

To finish, glue elastic to the two foam end pieces, making sure the ribbon and elastic overlap. See above photo for reference. Here I have the ribbon overlapping the elastic. Let glue fully dry and voila!

Alternatively you can begin glueing foam pieces in the middle and tie the headband at the back of your head to finish.

For faux floral headband:

I purchased my flower buds (haha, get it?) from a thrift store and cut the plastic stems to about a 1/16 of an inch. This is so the flowers don't sit bulkily but still have enough room for the safety pin to get sturdily through. Arrange the flowers on your headband material. Make sure the arrangement looks nice from all directions for extra mileage! Using small safety pins, attach flowers to elastic or ribbon.

To finish, tie and enjoy like I did. Or otherwise overlap in back (as if tying) 2 or 3 times and glue at the overlaps.

Bad hair day averted! Also thanks to Original Moxie's Shape Shifter and Lux Locks, which I used on my third day braid out.
